Mindfulness. How does it work?

A friend of mine mentioned she had recently been to a group meeting about mindfulness and said it was to help her to focus and be more aware in certain situations. I believe they did some kind of meditations concentrating on the beating of their own hearts. She said at one of the meetings they went outside to lie down on grass and to concentrate wholly on the sounds of the birds. Amazingly she said that she actually stopped hearing the traffic in the distance and could hear so many different bird songs it blew her mind. 

Sounds good doesn't it?  I'm sure it's really really relaxing.

There is a very interesting Ted talk here on Mindfulness as being a way of engaging and being, suggesting that it should be taught to everyone. If it increases feeling for overall well-being it certainly is something to look into
